Isotactic and Syndiotactic Pentacontamers (50mers) of Methyl Methacrylate Obtained by Fractionation with Preparative SFC: The GPC Analysis of the 50mers and Their Stereocomplex

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Highly isotactic (it-) and highly syndiotactic 2Smers and SOmers of MMA have been isolated from it-and st-PMMAs, respectively, by means of the preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) using carbon dioxide/ethanol as mobile phase and silica gel as stationary phase. The 2Smers and SOmers with definite molecular weight (2561 and 5064) were useful as the standard materials in GPC for the calibration of molecular weight and the direct evaluation of instrumental spreading. The it-SOmer eluted fa… Show more

“…The optimum ratio of sPMMA and iPMMA for the stereocomplex formation is a matter of controversy. Although the 2/1 s/i weight ratio is most often reported [10,14], Miyamoto et al [15] and Ute et al [16] have proposed a 1/1 weight ratio and Spevacek et al [17] and Katime et al [18] have published a 1.5/1 weight ratio. One of the reasons for this discrepancy might be a difference in the PMMA stereoregularity.…”

“…11 SFC fractionation of it-and st-PMMA-OHs was performed under the following conditions: flow rate of liquefied CO 2 : 9.0 ml min À1 ; flow rate of methanol entrainer: 1.80 ml min À1 (for it-PMMA-OH) or 1.88 ml min À1 (for st-PMMA-OH); fluid pressure: 200 kgf cm À2 ; initial column temperature: 80 1C (for it-PMMA-OH) or 70 1C (for st-PMMA-OH); and rate of cooling: 1 1C min À1 . SFC chromatograms were recorded using a ultraviolet detector operated at a wavelength of 220 nm.…”

“…11 Later, they analyzed the uniform PMMA stereocomplex formed in acetone using an online SEC-NMR method to identify the stoichiometry of the complexed component. The st-/it-compositions of the stereocomplex in the mixtures were determined to be 1.61-1.94, indicating the coexistence of at least two types of stereocomplexes with different compositions (for example, st-/it-¼ 1/1 and 2/1).…”
