“…Besides these compounds, several polysaccharides including homogalacturonan, rhamnogalacturonan-I, cellulose, xyloglucan, heteroxylan and glucomannan have been determined in the leaves of C. intybus (Sun et al, 2006). Whereas, the roots were found to be rich in sesquiterpene lactones, coumarins and inulins (Hazra et al, 2002;Kisiel and Michalska, 2006;Wu et al, 2007).…”

“…In order to achieve an efficient resolution of target compounds, a two-phase solvent system composed of ethyl acetate–methanol–water was examined using semi-preparative HSCCC by varying the mutual volume ratio, since this solvent system has been successfully applied to separate various samples with a moderate degree of polarity [1316]. In the present study, the K values of the five compounds were determined for selecting suitable solvent systems (Table 1).…”

“…The corresponding partition coefficient values indicated that under these conditions, both compounds passed mainly in the organic phase (K D value from 0.1 to 0.7), meaning that these systems are not suitable to achieve a satisfactory separation. Previous studies on the CPC separation of various sesquiterpene lactones [31,32] recommended Arizona systems consequently; four of them corresponding to the polarity of A. Radiata compounds were evaluated: the F, G, H and K Arizona systems (systems 3-6 in Table 1). The best partitions were observed for systems F (1:5:1:5) and G (1:4:1:4) with K D in the range 1-6 allowing a good retention of compounds and reasonable fractionation time.…”
