In Taiwan, the ant genus Strumigenys is represented by 13 species, nine of which being endemic to this island. Classic morphological taxonomy can be complex and may lead to equivoque identification within this group. To clarify subtle species assignments, we investigated the venom composition of five Strumigenys species, using SPME extraction and GC/MS analyses, and searched for a suitable chemical marker. Our results indicate that three out of the five species tested showed enough specificity in their chemical profiles to allow clear differentiation. However, the two remaining species could not be distinguished from each other on the basis of their venom composition. We further assessed the phylogenetic relationships between the five species, analyzing both morphological and chemical characters. Our clusters revealed congruency between some species associations and suggested that the analysis of venom composition may apply, at least partially, to Strumigenys chemosystematics. However, important discrepancies also appeared, signifying that selective pressures for chemical diversification have operated differentially during the speciation and dispersal processes within this genus inTaiwan.

Prorops nasuta Waterston (Hymenoptera: Bathylidae) es un ectoparásito que se alimenta de todos los estados inmaduros de la broca del café, Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scotylinae) y que se reproduce depositando sus huevecillos en la parte ventral de las larvas maduras y pupas de su huésped. Estudios previos han demostrado que este parasitoide es atraído a los olores provenientes de los desechos alimenticios y fecales de su huésped. Este estudio investigó el efecto de algunos factores tales como edad, alimentación, sexo y experiencia de oviposición en la respuesta del parasitoide P. nasuta a los olores provenientes de los desechos de su huésped. Los bioensayos se realizaron en un olfactómetro tipo "Y". Los resultados muestran que las hembras de P. nasuta sin alimentar y alimentadas con miel-agua prefirieron significativamente los olores provenientes de los desechos que al control. En contraste, las hembras alimentadas con inmaduros no mostraron ninguna preferencia por los olores de los desechos o por el control. Los resultados muestran que la edad de las hembras no influyó en su respuesta a los olores de los desechos de su huésped. Los machos de P. nasuta no fueron atraídos a los olores provenientes de los desechos. La previa experiencia de las hembras no influyó en su respuesta a los olores de los desechos. Chemical signals mediating communication in ant societies are usually complex mixtures of substances with considerable variation in molecular composition and in relative proportions of components. Such multicomponent signals can be produced in single exocrine glands, but they can also be composed with secretions from several glands. This variation is often functional, identifying groups or specific actions on a variety of organizational levels. Chemical signals can be further combined with cues from other sensory modalities, such as vibrational or tactile stimuli. These kinds of accessory signals usually serve in modulatory communication, lowering the response threshold in the recipient for the actual releasing stimulus. Comparative studies suggest that modulatory signals evolved through ritualization from actions originally not related to the same behavioral context, and modulatory signals may further evolve to become independent releasing signals.The impressive diversity and ecological dominance of ant societies are in large part due to their efficient social organization and the underlying communication system. The functional division into reproductive and sterile castes, the cooperation in rearing the young, gathering food, defending the nest, exploring new foraging grounds, establishing territorial borders, and discriminating and excluding foreigners from the society are regulated by the precise transmission of social signals in time and space.Probably the best-studied communication behavior in ants is chemical communication, but other sensory modalities, such as mechanical cues, also play an important role in the formation of multicomponent signals in ant communication. Chemical releasers are produced in a variety of exocrine glands, and considerable progress has been made in chemically identifying many of these glandular secretions (for reviews see refs. 1 and 2). In this essay I will not emphasize, however, the natural product chemistry of ant pheromones, but rather concentrate on the proposition that communication in ant societies is often based on multicomponent signals, on nested levels of variation in chemical and other cues, which feature both anonymous and specific characteristics (3).
