Isolation of salmonellae and other potential pathogens from the freshwater aquarium snail Ampullaria

Abstract: The freshwater aquarium snail (Ampullaria spp.) was demonstrated to carry as many as 108 viable mesophilic bacteria per g of meat plus shell. Some 16 genera of bacteria were identified, with gram negatives predominating. Enrichment culture techniques enabled the isolation of salmonellae from 24 of 42 lots of 200 g each. The salmonellae comprised eight different serotypes, including Salmonella newport, Salmonella saint-paul, and Salmonella infantis. This association of salmonellae with snails may contribute to … Show more

“…In our studies of laboratory snails, we found this medium to be preferable to Trypticase soy agar (BBL), nutrient agar, 0.1% peptone-yeast extract agar, and unamended agar (unpublished data). The plates were incubated at room temperature for at least 1 week before the colonies were counted.…”

“…In 1981, the bacteria were again observed by the direct fluorescent-antibody test (DFAT) in a larger number of dead salmon. E. tarda, characterized by Ewing et al (4), have been isolated from a variety of vertebrates (3,8,10,16,23) and invertebrates (1,18). In fish, E. tarda have generally been associated with warm-water species (11,15,(21)(22)(23)25).…”

“…A total of 493 colonies were isolated and identified. The normal mesophilic flora was evaluated initially and found to be similar to the microflora found in previous aquatic samples examined (1,10). In addition to the aerobic and facultative isolations ofAlcaligenes sp.…”
