Isolation of Neisseria meningitidis from the urethra, cervix, and anal canal: further observations.

Abstract: suMMARY Neisseria meningitidis was recovered from the urethra of nine and from the anal canal of seven men, and from the cervix of two women. Twelve of the 16 men were admitted homosexuals. Seven men had no symptoms, while the remainder had mild to moderate symptoms. One woman was asymptomatic and the other was in hospital with acute salpingitis. Reports of previous isolations of meningococci from the urethra, cervix, or anal canal are reviewed. It is concluded that in men, these infections are usually mild an… Show more

“…As the rectum and urethra are physiologically distinct from the nasopharynx, factors such as the polysaccharide capsule, a wellknown meningococcal virulence determinant, may be important for colonisation and persistence (table 1), consistent with the prevalence of encapsulated strains identified here and previously. [28][29][30] The expansion of meningococci into this environment may result in adaptation leading to the emergence of strains that are able to persist by novel means of colonisation and transmission. An example is the gene aniA encoding nitrite reductase and essential for the growth of gonococci under oxygen-limiting conditions.…”

“…Meningococci of clinical importance have been isolated from genitourinary sites (8,11). Furthermore, the occurrence of double infections with N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae (8) increase the possibility that beta-lactamase-producing N. gonorrhoeae isolates may transfer their plasmids to the meningococcus.…”

“…Meningococci have been isolated from the genitourinary tract of patients both with [72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81] and without 76 78 79 82 symptoms. Urethritis due to meningococci was first reported in 1942, 72 and several case reports suggest that it may be associated with oro-genital contact.…”
