A new cyclic dipeptide, petrocidin A (1), along with three known compounds—2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2), 2,3-dihydroxybenzamide (3), and maltol (4)—were isolated from the solid culture of Streptomyces sp. SBT348. The strain Streptomyces sp. SBT348 had been prioritized in a strain collection of 64 sponge-associated actinomycetes based on its distinct metabolomic profile using liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The absolute configuration of all α-amino acids was determined by HPLC analysis after derivatization with Marfey’s reagent and comparison with commercially available reference amino acids. Structure elucidation was pursued in the presented study by mass spectrometry and NMR spectral data. Petrocidin A (1) and 2,3-dihydroxybenzamide (3) exhibited significant cytotoxicity towards the human promyelocytic HL-60 and the human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 cell lines. These results demonstrated the potential of sponge-associated actinomycetes for the discovery of novel and pharmacologically active natural products.

The review summarizes literature data and presents the data obtained by the authors on the chemical composition, antioxidant and pharmacological activity of an aqueous extract of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica L.). Fir is widely used in folk medicine as a tonic, anti-cold, bactericidal, antiscorbutic agent. One of the most promising in terms of study and use as a herbal medicine is an aqueous extract of Siberian fir, obtained by water-steam distillation of fir paws. On the basis of this extract, a number of drugs have been created that have a wide spectrum of pharmacological action. The review presents data on the study of the chemical composition of an aqueous extract of Siberian fir, which demonstrate the complexity and multicomponent nature of its composition. The main biologically active substances of the water extract of fir are maltol, anthocyanins, terpene, tanning and other compounds. The authors found that the concentration of an aqueous extract of Siberian fir leads to an increase in its composition of tannins and an increase in the antioxidant activity of the extract. Analysis of the literature data and the results obtained by the authors on the study of pharmacological activity shows that the aqueous extract of Siberian fir has an adaptogenic, antihypoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiradiation, antioxidant, immunomodulatory effect. The information presented in the review demonstrates that the aqueous extract of Siberian fir, due to the availability of raw materials, positive experience in the treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases, is promising for its further study and creation on its basis of new effective medicinal, parapharmaceutical agents and other types of products.

Investigation on ethnomedicinal significance of tree bark used by primitive tribes of Paderu division, Alluri Sitarama Raju District, Andhra Pradesh. A total of 99 species of medicinal tree species belong to 74 genera and 39 families are commonly used to treat 78 types of diseases. Out of 39 families, Moraceae had the highest proportion of medicinal plants followed by the Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosaceae, Apocynaceae, Anacardiaceae, Combretaceae, Lamiaceae and Rubiaceae each with 5 species. The people of this area have been using a variety of plants for treating different diseases and ailments. They have abundant indigenous knowledge about plant collection, dosage form preparation, and their utilization.
