Isolation of Legionella pneumophila from blood culture.

Abstract: mode of action of the clostridial toxin is not yet clear but it may elicit a local Schwartzman reaction, usually resulting in mucosal changes identical with those of acute ischaemia.i In our patient the location of the vascular damage differed from that postulated in classical drug-associated pseudomembranous enterocolitis because the small vessels of the entire bowel wall were affected. Whether this was due to the specific pharmacokinetics of clindamycin or modification of the vascular reaction to putative ba… Show more

“…There have not been many documented cases of Legionella bacteremia. Single isolations have been reported by using biphasic blood culture media and supplemented proteose peptone broth (45,101,105,106). The BACTEC 460 instrument recovered isolates variably: in one study, aerobic 6B bottles were positive by growth index and subculture whereas the anaerobic 7D bottles were negative (32); in another study, the 7D bottles were positive by blind subculture whereas the aerobic bottles were negative (145).…”
