“…In Europe, these are Culex pipiens, Culex torrentium (principal enzootic vector in Sweden), Culiseta morsitans, Coquillettidia richiardii, Ochlerotatus communis, Ochlerotatus excrucians, Aedes cinereus, and Anopheles hyrcanus (Berezin et al 1972;Francy et al 1989;Lundström et al 1990a, b;Turell et al 1990;Lvov et al 1984Lvov et al , 1985. Laboratory transmission of SINV was documented also in Aedes albopictus (Dohm et al 1995).…”

“…A great input for the study of SINV in Europe has been outbreaks with hundreds of cases in Fennoscandia since 1981 that repeat at about 7-year periodicity (1974, 1981/1982, 1988, 1995, 2002). The disease has been called variably according to the region involved as 'Ockelbo' (Sweden), 'Pogosta' (Finland), or 'Karelian' (NW Russia) fever (Lvov et al 1982(Lvov et al , 1985(Lvov et al , 1988Skogh and Espmark 1982;Espmark and Niklasson 1984;Niklasson et al 1984Niklasson et al , 1988Niklasson and Vene 1996). The average annual incidence of SINV fever in Finland, 1995Finland, -2003, was the highest in North Karelia with 25.7 cases per 100,000 population, while in other parts of the country, it varied between 0.4 and 14.8 cases/100,000 population.…”

“…It is not restricted to tropical and subtropical areas of the globe, and infections have occurred in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. SinV is related genetically or antigenically to the viruses isolated from insects or birds during outbreaks of diseases involving joint inflammation [Kurkela et al, 2004], such as Pogosta disease in Finland [Calisher et al, 1985], Ockelbo disease in Sweden [Skogh and Espmark, 1982;Espmark and Niklasson, 1984], and Karelian fever in Russia [Lvov et al, 1984]. Isolation of SinV directly from humans has been reported in South Africa, China, and Finland [Kurkela et al, 2004].…”

“…SINV was first isolated from a pool of 63 Culex pipiens and Culex univittatus mosquitoes collected in the Sindbis health district, near Cairo, in 1952 (15) and was further demonstrated to be the causative agent of a febrile illness associated with maculopapular rash and joint pain in humans in Africa, Eurasia (Ockelbo disease, Pogosta disease, and Karelian fever), and Australia (8,9,13). In Europe, the vectors are ornithophilic mosquitoes of the species Culex torrentium, C. pipiens, and Culiseta morsitans, as well as Ochlerotatus spp.…”
