Isolation of immunomodulatory triterpene acids from a standardized rose hip powder (Rosa canina L.)

Abstract: A previously published systematic review and a metaanalysis have concluded that the consumption of standardized rose hip powder (Rosa canina L.) can reduce pain in osteoarthritis patients. Synovial inflammation has been suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis and mainly to involve infiltration of the synovial membrane by macrophages. Therefore, the immunomodulatory effect of standardized rose hip powder of Rosa canina L. was investigated and active principles isolated using th… Show more

“…Rosa canina fruits (rose hip) were reported to contain antioxidant nutrients and an anti-inflammatory galactolipid (Kirkeskov et al, 2011). DCM extracts from rose hip powder and the triterpene acids oleanolic acid and ursolic acid (IC 50 21±6 μM) isolated thereof significantly and concentration dependently inhibited LPS-induced IL-6 release from Mono Mac 6 cells (Saaby et al, 2011). Rose hip powder extracts of different polarity were tested for inhibition of COX-1, COX-2, and 5-LOX-mediated leukotriene B4 (LTB4) formation as well as for DPPH-radical-scavenging capacity.…”

“…Several natural triterpenes inhibit IKK and block NF-κB activation. In this way, OA and UA reduce tumor necrosis factor-α–induced E-selectin expression in human endothelial cells (57), inhibit IL-6 release in lipopolysaccharide-activated Mono Mac 6 cells (58), and suppress the endothelin-1 pathway in Zucker diabetic rats (59). BA also represses NF-κB in human colorectal carcinoma HCT116, colon carcinoma Caco-2, and lung carcinoma H1299 cells, with these effects being correlated with its ability to inhibit IKK (60).…”

“…OA is also found in soybeans (Zhang and Popovich, 2009), filamentous fungi, and Sedium aizoon (Laszczyk, 2009). Ginseng, Thunder-God-Vine, rose hip powder, and many medicinal herbs contain OA as a natural product (Liu, 1995; Saaby et al, 2011). The concentrations of OA can be as high as 1–3% as in Ginseng, papaya fruit, olive fruit, apple skin, and dark plums (Pollier and Goossens, 2012).…”
