Isolation ofBrucella abortusfrom a Dog and a Cat Confirms their Biological Role in Re-emergence and Dissemination of Bovine Brucellosis on Dairy Farms

Abstract: Brucellosis is highly contagious bacterial zoonoses affecting a wide range of domesticated and wild animals. In this study, Brucella (B.) abortus bv 1 was identified in uterine discharge of apparently healthy bitch and queen with open pyometra housed on a cattle farm. This study highlights the role of dogs and cats as symptomatic carriers and reservoirs for Brucella. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first report of feline infection with B. abortus bv 1 globally. These pet animals may con… Show more

“…Other respondents listed cats, dogs and rats as susceptible host for brucellosis. In fact, B. melitensis biovar 1 and 3 had previously been isolated from stray dogs, cats and rats trapped near dairy farms and water canals in Egypt, at levels higher than seropositive herds (El‐Sherif & El‐Sheary, ; Wareth et al, ). It is likely that respondents who stated these rare brucellosis susceptible animal species were not acquainted with what have been recently published in the literature and reported that by chance.…”

“…This might perpetuate the spread of infection to susceptible hosts and the environment (El‐Diasty & Wareth, ). Further, the programme ignores the surveillance of infection in non‐specific hosts including pet animals on farms as reservoirs of infection (Wareth et al, ) despite that spillover from livestock to wildlife has been reported (Truong et al, ). This is becoming particularly relevant, as stray dog and cat populations are increasing.…”

“…Consequently, close contact with infected cats is a risk factor for humans. 26 Earlier, a case of human infection with brucellosis from a cat was reported, 27 and Brucella organisms were cultured from the cats in both instances. In another study, a cat from a farm area tested positive for Brucella spp.…”
