Isolation of bla NDM -producing Enterobacteriaceae in a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: Carbapenemases have great importance in the global epidemiological scenario since infections with carbapenemase-producing bacteria are associated with high mortality, especially in hospitalized patients in intensive care units. This study describes two microorganisms producers of the New Delhi Metallo-b-lactamase, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii, from two patients admitted to a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia. These are the first clinical cases of New Delhi Metallo-b-lactamase described in mi… Show more

“…The first clinical report of bla NDM in northeast Brazil was in a public hospital in Salvador, recently described by Barberino et al [48]. In our investigation, the presence of the bla NDM gene was verified in an E. coli isolate; however this strain did not express phenotypic resistance to carbapenems.…”

“…To our knowledge, this study is one of the first scientific reports describing K. pneumoniae isolates with blaKPC from this state. The first case of an Enterobacteriaceae (K. pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii) with blaNDM in this region was reported in 2015 in the neighboring state of Bahia 27,31 . Additionally, a recently published article (in 2019) reported the first case of NDM in the state of Sergipe from K. pneumoniae samples collected between 2012 and 2015 30 .…”

“…The occurrence of the bla NDM gene in 59.2 % of the isolates analyzed in this study is worrying and highlights the emergence of another carbapenemase that, in addition to KPC, can also hydrolyze carbapenems. Barberino et al (2018) 33 were the first to report the presence of the bla NDM gene in clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae and Citrobacter in two patients admitted to a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. Da Silva et al (2019) 34 detected the bla NDM-1 gene in different species of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from nine Brazilian states but did not include the state of Pernambuco.…”
