Isolation of Aeromonas salmonicida from Human Blood Sample: A Case Report

Abstract: Aeromonas salmonicida belonging to the genus Aeromonas, is a common pathogen that causes furunculosis and septicaemia in variety of fishes. It infects cold blooded vertebrates living at low temperatures mainly salmonid fish hence named salmonicida. Untill recently Aeromanas salmonicida is considered to be a fish pathogen. A. salmonicida is considered to be non-pathogenic for humans as it cannot grow at 37ºC. "However, In our laboratory culture plates and broths were incubated twice at 37ºC and each time same t… Show more

“…In the present case, the possible route of infection could be eyewash with contaminated water after cataract surgery. Aeromonas species may cause gastrointestinal infections, furunculosis, and septicemia in humans,[ 1 ] but ocular infections such as corneal ulcers or endophthalmitis are very rarely reported. A. hydrophila has been reported to cause endophthalmitis after a penetrating injury, post-traumatic keratitis, contact lens-related keratitis, and endogenous endophthalmitis.…”

“…Previously, Aeromonas species were considered as pathogens in cold-blooded animals only, but gradually, they have been recognized as opportunistic pathogens for humans causing gastrointestinal infections and septicemia. [ 1 ] Rarely, they have been reported to cause ocular infections including corneal ulcers and endophthalmitis. [ 2 ] A list of infections caused by genus Aeromonas is mentioned in Table 1 .…”

“…The primary VFs identified in three holding pen samples from the same geographic region (i.e., TX) are purported to originate solely from Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas salmonicida , waterborne pathogens of humans and salmonid fish, respectively ( 36 , 37 ). Interestingly, an extremely large number of reads (range, 1.36% to 2.38% of total filtered reads) were classified under these two bacterial species within these same three holding pen samples, suggesting that there may have been contamination in the holding pen water.…”

“…Rhizobium radiobacter nitrogen fixing soil bacteria was also identified in the background biota. Aeromonas salmonicida was first isolated in cold-water environments and is considered as pathogen of aquatic vertebrates, but Tewari et al [12] presented the first report of Aeromonas salmonicida isolated from human blood. Sphingobacterium, which is a ubiquitous environmental bacterium genus, was also identified.…”
