“…The three Phlebotomus (Larroussius) species, i.e. P. neglectus, P. perfiliewi and P. tobbi, could play a role in the transmission of VL in the area studied, being proven L. infantum vectors (Léger et al, 1988(Léger et al, , 2000Maroli et al, 1987). As for the seasonal trend of adult phlebotomine fauna, it could be determined only for P. neglectus, the most widespread species.…”

“…As a result, such patients, who can infect sandflies, become the source of this anthroponotic pathogen. Although sandfly vectors implicated in the transmission of each parasite are different, there are 13 known sandfly species in Greece, 10 of which belong to the medically important genus of Phlebotomus and 3 to Sergentomyia, [13][14][15][16][17] and are widely spread in the country (Figure 3, Table 3). The close association of the vectors with human habitation, especially in rural areas, ensures transmission of L. infantum from infected dogs to humans.…”

“…Nonetheless, veterinary records substantiate the emergence of CanL in new areas and the increase in dog cases in areas where the problem was already evident. Thirteen sandfly species, 10 belonging to the medically important genus of Phlebotomus and 3 to Sergentomyia are known in Greece, [13][14][15][16][17] 5 of which are proven or suspected vectors of L. infantum (P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi, P. neglectus), L. donovani (P. tobbi), L. tropica (P. similis), and L. major (P. papatasi).…”

“…The putative vector of L. infantum in the Mediterranean region is P. (Larroussius) neglectus (Leger et al 1988, Garifallou et al 1989, which was the most frequent and abundant species found in all areas studied except in the small island of Gavdos, south of Crete. Our results confirm previous records of P. neglectus in Crete (Adler et al 1938, Ristorcelli 1939, Hadjinicolaou 1958, Leger et al 1993, Aransay et al 1999, and show that the species is widely spread in the island (Fig.…”

“…From 1951From to 1975 alleged human VL cases were recorded on the island (Leger et al 1979) and few canine leishmaniasis cases were reported until 1983 . Since then, Phlebotomus neglectus, the putative vector of L. infantum in Crete (Leger et al 1988), has been found in high numbers on the island (Leger et al 1993, Ivovic et al 2007) and seroepidemiological studies in dogs, during the last 25 years, showed that the number of seropositive animals increases with time (Antoniou et al 2009): from 0.27% in 1990 (Data of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture) to 2.9% in 1994 and 19.8% in 2009. This may be explained by the fact that dogs are brought into the island from mainland, especially from Attica, where leishmaniasis is endemic.…”
