Isolation and identification of Staphylococcus aureus from milk and milk products and their drug resistance patterns in Anand, Gujarat

Abstract: Aim: The study was carried out with aim to isolate Staphylococcus aureus from milk and milk products (pedha and curd) and determine antibiogram pattern of S. aureus isolates. Materials and Methods: During 9 months duration of study a total of 160 milk and milk product samples (pedha and curd) were collected from different places in and around Anand city such as milk collection centre of Co-operative milk dairies, cattle farms, individual household, milk vendors and sweet shops. The samples were collected under… Show more

“…The use of antibiotics to treat mastitis during lactation is common, as between 2% and 55% of cows encounter a mastitis infection during this period (Kelton et al, 1998). Notably, bacterial strains associated with bovine mastitis, including many S. aureus isolates, have demonstrated resistance to antibiotics such as penicillins, oxytetracycline, streptomycin and/or gentamicin (Thaker et al, 2013). These problems can be limited through the withholding of milk from sale in situations where a cow has mastitis and is being treated with antibiotics or during a compulsory withdrawal period after antibiotic treatment.…”

“…Studies show that susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus aureus to antimicrobial agent have varied worldwide, but isolates were usually susceptible to kanamycin, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, and gentamicin (Alian et al, 2012;Daka et al, 2012;Thaker et al, 2013;Mekuria et al, 2013). S. aureus isolates in the present study also showed high sensitivity towards vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, cefoxitin, cephalotin, gentamycin, chloramphenicol and kanamycin.…”

“…Human illness through S. aureus range from minor skin infection such as pimples, boils, cellulites, toxic shock syndrome, impetigo, and abscesses to life threatening disease such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, and septicaemia (Daka et al, 2012;Thaker et al, 2013;Mekuria et al, 2013). S. aureus is also a major causative pathogen of clinical and subclinical mastitis in animals (Adwan et al, 2005;Mekuria et al, 2013).…”

“…Some researchers like Thaker et al (2013) 21 found S. aureus in milk and pedha samples. Possible contamination occurs due to bulk tanks, less hygienic milking processes, and udders of dirty animals.…”
