Isolation and identification of specific bacteriophages against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases-producing Escherichia coli, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in vitro

Abstract: Drug resistance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii are also cited as one of the most important causes of community and hospital acquired infections. Phage therapy can be used as a therapeutic method for the treatment of infections caused by these bacteria. The aim of this study was to isolate bacteriophages from municipal wastewater and assess their effects against… Show more

“…One of the most resistant forms of this bacterium is methicillin-resistant strains. 15 Methicillin is used to treat bacterial infections caused by organisms of the genus Staphylococcus. It is active against certain types of staphylococci, which are resistant to penicillin, but ultimately show resistance to methicillin.…”

“…At present, transcriptomic analyses of A. baumannii phages and their hosts are very scarce. Although many reports have verified the antibacterial potential of phages in vitro or in vivo, there are no data to analyze the changes in phages and bacteria globally [ 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 , 169 ]. This brings a huge workload to the clinical formulation of phage therapy or phage-antibiotic combination therapy.…”

“…The most common bacterial species isolated from patients in a COVID-19 ICU are Gram-negative isolates such as A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae , while high proportions of MRSA and VRE were observed among the Gram-positive isolates [ 65 , 66 , 67 ]. Numerous reports indicate that multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae is one of the most important infectious agents isolated from COVID-19 ICU patients [ 68 , 69 ]. In these patients, co-infection with this pathogen causes a wide range of diseases, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and sepsis [ 69 ].…”
