Isolation and identification of Rhizoctonia-like fungi from roots of three orchid genera, Paphiopedilum, Dendrobium, and Cymbidium, collected in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces of Thailand

Abstract: Three orchid genera, Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium, and Dendrobium, are among the most heavily traded ornamental plants in Thailand. In this study, 27 isolates of Rhizoctonia-like fungi were isolated from root sections of mature orchids in the three orchid genera, collected from diverse horticultural settings in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces of Thailand. Fungal identification was done by the morphological characterization, the comparison of the internal transcribed spacer and 5.8S ribosomal DNA sequences, and… Show more

“…For comparative analyses of the mycorrhizal fungi sequences from D. chrysanthum and D. nobile, 5.8S and nrLSU alignments, including the closest BLAST matches together with the fungal sequences from mature plants of tropical epiphytes (Suárez et al 2006(Suárez et al , 2008Nontachaiyapoom et al 2010), were analyzed. Sequences were aligned using Clustal X 1.83 (Thompson et al 1997).…”

“…The colonization patterns of ORMs in Central Japan appear to be specific for Sebacina sp., a mycobiont in Cephalanthera falcata but not in C. erecta, which is associated with thelephoroids (Matsuda et al 2009). Sequence homologies of 5.8S rDNAs from Epulorhiza calendulina, isolated from Paphiopedilum species in Thailand (Nontachaiyapoom et al 2010), were related to Sebacina. Kottke and Suárez Chacón (2009) found Sebacina in the Andean Sobralia rosea (Fig.…”
