Isolation and identification of probiotic Lactobacillus from local dairy and evaluating their antagonistic effect on pathogens

Abstract: Objective:Probiotics such as lactobacilli prevent the development of a wide range of human and animal's pathogens. The aim of this study was evaluation of antagonistic effect of isolated lactobacilli from local dairy products against three standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Materials and Methods:Twenty samples of local dairy products including cow milk, buffalo milk, cheese, and yogurt were collected from different areas of Ahwaz city. Antimicrobial disc di… Show more

“…Therefore, LAB have been also intensively studied and widely used in recent decades for their beneficial properties as potential antagonists (Kajander et al, 2005; Hong et al, 2014; Lan et al, 2016). Diverse LAB products have been developed on the basis of wide array of species including L. reuteri , L. acidophilus , L. intestinalis , L. plantarum , L. casei , and L. sakei (Kılıç and Karahan, 2010; Karami et al, 2017; Tashakor et al, 2017). The actual isolation of probiotic bacteria is a field of research that has not been addressed in depth so far.…”

“…Probiotics are known to be effective in preventing or counteracting foodborne infections by reducing the growth of enteric pathogens through different mechanisms, involving competitive exclusion or the production of inhibitory molecules (Karami et al, 2017 ; Mathipa and Thantsha, 2017 ). We therefore tested the antimicrobial activity exerted by the L. pentosus and L. coryniformis strains against three common pathogens, namely S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, L. monocytogenes and ETEC.…”
