Isolation and Identification of Polystyrene Degrading Bacteria from Zophobas morio’s Gut

Abstract: Polystyrene (PS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) are commodity plastics widely used in many industries. The increase of PS in the environment causes ecological threats. It has been observed that the beetle larvae feed on plastic packages, and this has drawn the researcher’s attention towards the complex system within the larvae’s gut where relationships between fungi, bacteria, and the insect host have been established. The objective of this study is to isolate and identify PS-degrading microbe from super worms… Show more

“…Regular aggregate can be partially or wholly replaced with lightweight aggregate in lightweight concrete, depending on the desired density and strength requirements [8]. The current study uses expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads as lightweight aggregates in mortars and concrete that incorporate silica fume as an additional cementitious material [9].…”

“…The recycled polystyrene is processed back into EPS beads or regrind material and mixed with additives and cement to form lightweight concrete blocks. Typically, the composition of polystyrene concrete includes recovered polystyrene granules, cement silica aggregate, and modifying agents such as setting accelerators [8] .…”

“…Desde hace algunos años se planteó el uso de metodologías biotecnológicas para buscar soluciones sostenibles y efectivas para el tratamiento de desechos plásticos. Entre estas herramientas está el manejo de microbiota intestinal de invertebrados como los insectos (An et al, 2023;Tan et al, 2021;Yang et al, 2015).…”
