Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides are widely used in agriculture to improve crop yields. Most of the compounds used are synthetic, and their overuse causes environmental pollution and human health problems. Currently, several countries are working to reduce the use of agrochemicals. Organic agriculture is now emerging as a sustainable alternative to traditional agriculture using environmentally friendly strategies such as the application of organic fertilizers from plant and animal waste and pesticides based on plant extracts and microbials. However, the availability of commercial biopesticides and organic fertilizers is very limited because there are certain barriers to the commercialization of biological products. These barriers include small available quantities of raw materials and strict registration laws requiring toxicological tests and other studies that are expensive and time consuming. The objective of this review is to provide details about the various organic fertilizers and pesticides that do not have the same disadvantages as synthetic compounds in terms of persistence and toxicity.

Toxic contaminates have profound consequences on both health and the environment. Consequently, effective approaches for addressing the effects of these toxicants are paramount. Here, we review recent progress in developing polymeric sequestrants for biological toxins, heavy metals and organic micropollutants. Polymers have several advantages as sequestration materials, including relatively low cost and high affinity for target compounds. As a result a number of polymer-based toxin-mitigation applications have been investigated. Naturally occurring toxins may be neutralized with polymers capable of binding and eliminating them from the body. Heavy metal contamination from mining operations, energy and industrial sources may also be mitigated with appropriate chelating polymers, both for environmental remediation and in chelation therapy for metal poisoning. Micropollutants such as pesticides from agriculture and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from combustion processes may also be isolated using polymeric materials. Each of these applications illustrates the capabilities of polymers for eliminating toxic contaminants, thereby facilitating greater health and sustainability.

RESUMOA contaminação do ambiente agrícola tornou-se um grave problema global. O uso indiscriminado de pesticidas tem provocado diversos problemas à saúde humana, toxicidade a organismos alvo e não alvo, além de alterar a qualidade do ar, água e solo. Em 2008, o Brasil se tornou o maior consumidor mundial de pesticidas e por isso cresce o interesse em investigar estratégias de remediação in situ desses compostos. Neste sentido o objetivo desta pesquisa foi discutir sobre as diferentes estratégias de fitorremediação e vermirremediação de solos contaminados com pesticidas e as respectivas vantagens e limitações de cada uma dessas biotecnologias. Observou-se que as biotecnologias apresentadas neste trabalho apresentam vantagens econômicas e ambientais em comparação com os métodos físicos e químicos, porém apresentam limitações que precisam ser superadas através de pesquisa científica e ensaios em escala de laboratório, piloto e campo. Muitos trabalhos têm sido desenvolvidos na área de biotecnologias de remediação de solos contaminados por pesticidas, entretanto a maioria ocorre em condições de clima temperado. O Brasil precisa explorar mais essas biotecnologias uma vez que dispõe de elevado potencial por possuir condições climáticas e biodiversidade mais favorável em comparação com regiões de clima temperado. REMEDIATION BIOTECHNOLOGIES FOR CONTAMINATED SOIL WITH AGROCHEMICALSABSTRACT The contamination of the agricultural environment has become a major global problem. The indiscriminate use of pesticides has caused several problems to human health, toxicity to target organisms and non-target, and change the quality of air, water and soil. In 2008, Brazil became the world's largest consumer of pesticides and therefore growing interest in investigating remediation strategies in situ these compounds. In this sense, the objective of this research is to discuss the different strategies of phytoremediation and vermiremediation of soils contaminated with AGRARIAN ACADEMY, Centro Científico Conhecer -Goiânia, v.3, n.05; p.2016 28 pesticides and their advantages and limitations of each of these biotechnologies. It was observed that biotechnologies presented in this work have economic and environmental advantages compared to the physical and chemical methods, but have limitations that must be overcome through scientific research and conduct testing in laboratory scale, pilot scale and field scale. Many studies have been developed in the area contaminated by pesticides soil remediation technologies, though most occur in temperate conditions. Brazil needs to further explore these biotechnologies since it has high potential for having climatic conditions and more favorable biodiversity compared with temperate regions.
