Isolation and description of keratinase producing marine actinobacteria from South Indian Coastal Region

Abstract: A unique standard starch casein medium has been implemented for the isolation of actinobacteria from the south Indian marine sediments. A combination of techniques, morphological, physiological and biochemical tests provided the evidence for the isolated actinobacteria. All the 56 isolates were inoculated on milk agar and soya meal agar plates for the primary proteolytic screening and the proportional study was made by ANOVA. Among the 56 isolates, nine showed proteolytic activity in terms of making clear zone… Show more

“…), or bacteria (e.g. Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis ) (Gopinath et al, 2015;More, 2013;Selvam, Vishnupriya, & Yamuna, 2013). Feather degradation mainly depends on keretinase enzymes which are responsible for releasing peptides from keratin (Nickerson & Durand, 1963) after reduction of native keratine to reduced keratin by disulfite reductase enzyme (Sangali & Brandelli, 2000).…”

“…A new bacterium, Bacillus tropicus, capable of destroying feathers, was isolated and identifi ed in a soil sample from a sea duck farm in Beibu Creek in Guangxa (China) (Shen et al, 2022). Of 56 actinobacteria isolated from the southern coastal region of India, only three showed the ability to degrade feathers (Selvam et al, 2013).…”
