Isolation and Cultivation of Anaerobes

Abstract: Anaerobic microorganisms play important roles in different biotechnological processes. Their complex metabolism and special cultivation requirements have led to less isolated representatives in comparison to their aerobic counterparts. In view of that, the isolation and cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms is still a promising venture, and conventional methodologies as well as considerations and modifications are presented here. An insight into new methodologies and devices as well as a discussion on future… Show more

“…To prove whether-potential periodontal pathogens could be causal for LVAD-related infections, other localizations and the examined bacteria would need to be investigated. First, the above-mentioned bacteria related to periodontitis are anaerobic, showing a complex metabolism and special cultivation requirements [23]. Second, the common potential periodontal pathogens or their DNA were found in different cardiac tissue [24,25].…”

“…Although the accuracy and ease of functional gene prediction is rapidly improving, advances in functional assignment of microbial-glycan interactions have been limited. This is because cultivation can be difficult and low throughput (Alain and Querellou, 2009;Börner, 2016), even with the development of culturomic techniques [e.g., iChip (Berdy et al, 2017)]. Recently, phenotype-based methods have gained popularity because they enable functional screening of microbial cells in complex microbial communities.…”

“…Cultivation of anaerobes may be performed to propagate the microorganism of interest and to produce metabolic end products. Anaerobic microorganism can be found in a wide range of environments (Börner 2016 ). An organism can be classified with respect to the energy source, the electron donor species/compound and the carbon source it uses.…”
