Isolation and characterization of simian immunodeficiency virus from African white-crowned mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus)

Abstract: Forty-eight of 236 sera from seven species of African non-human primates in Kenya, including those of white-crowned mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus torquatus lunulatus) had antibodies to simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs). Isolates of simian lentivirus were obtained from seropositive white-crowned mangabey monkeys which are indigenous in West Africa. This virus, designated as SIVWCM, appeared morphologically similar to HIV by electron microscopy, showed Mg(2+)-dependent reverse transcriptase activity, and ind… Show more

“…imian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) naturally infect African nonhuman primates (NHPs) with virtually no deleterious pathogenic consequences and have a relatively high propensity for cross-species transmission in the wild and in research settings (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Both human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and HIV-2, the viruses responsible for the AIDS pandemic, originated by cross-species transmission of SIVs infecting chimpanzees/gorillas (SIVcpz/gor) and sooty mangabeys (SIVsmm), respectively (8).…”

“…They form at least eight phylogenetic lineages (3,11,20) and have evolved through host-dependent evolution (1,9,27,45,57), cross-species transmissions (12,37,62,65), recombinations (4,10,28,35,36,61), and preferential host switching (17). This highly divergent group of viruses may represent a significant threat for crossspecies transmission to humans, as shown by the fact that both human immunodeficiency virus type1 (HIV-1) and HIV-2 have originated from cross-species transmission from two different simian sources: chimpanzee for HIV-1 (27) and sooty-mangabey (SM) for HIV-2 (18).…”

“…However, in many cases the differences between phylogenetic relationships of some viruses and primate phylogeny indicated that there have been multiple crossspecies transmissions in the past (7,28,51). Cross-species transmission of PLVs can have a variety of outcomes in the new host.…”
