Isolation and characterization of polydentate ligands derived from the reaction of pentaerythrityltetrabromide and ethylenediamine

Abstract: A. MCAULEY, K . BEVERIDGE, S. SUBRAMANIAN, and T. W. WHITCOMBE. Can. J . Chem. 67, 1657Chem. 67, (1989. Reaction of pentaerythrityltetrabromide with ethylenediamine yields three product amines. These have been isolated by separation of the corresponding Ni2+ complexes. The free amine hydrochlorides have been obtained by acid hydrolysis of the ~i~+ species and have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy.

“…1) and the product distributions reflect differing degrees of competition between inter-and intra-molecular pathways, as has been established in related earlier work. [4][5][6][7][8] In the present publication we provide basic characterisation of several amine families differing with respect to donor atom separation, denticity and chirality, largely through structural characterisation of metal complexes of the new amines.…”

“…Treatment with fluoride ion removed the silyl ether group to give the triazidoderivative 27, which was isolated as a syrup. Working in the mmol scale, we encountered no problems with the azido functions, although caution must be exercised at all times with polyazido compounds, especially with larger runs (8). The 1-octenyl ether 28 was readily by alkylation in the presence of KH and tetrabutylammonium iodide in DMF at 0°C.…”

“…Tetrabromo and tetraamino derivatives of pentaerythritol have been known for many years (8). Recently, Neumann, Woulfe, and co-workers (9) reported the synthesis of a triamino analog of pentaerythritol in conjunction with novel routes to 1, 1,l -tris(aminomethyl)ethane (TAME), which is a well-known ligand for metal ions.…”
