Bovine parainfluenza 3 virus is a common virus that causes respiratory tract infection in cattle, sheep, and goats worldwide. The objective of this study is to identify macroscopic and histopathological lung lesions in slaughtered sheep during the period from December 2018 to December 2019 and to determine the presence of Bovine parainfluenza 3 virus (BPI3V) in frozen sheep pneumonic lung using a direct immunofluorescence antibody technique (DFAT). The overall prevalence of lung affection was 11% (1440/13084). The gross lesions were acute bronchopneumonia (58.12%), interstitial pneumonia (07.15%), fibrinous bronchopneumonia (10.70%), suppurative bronchopneumonia (03.47%), verminous pneumonia (13.75%), and ovine pulmonary adenomatosis (06.81%). There was a significant difference in the rate of pulmonary lesions according to the seasons of the study. The lesions were more frequently observed in autumn and winter with a rate of 34.17% and 28.05%, respectively. The DFAT was carried out only on 107 pneumonic samples with interstitial pneumonia, fibrinous bronchopneumonia, and acute bronchopneumonia. The BPI3V antigens were detected in 12 samples (11.21%). This is the first study that revealed the presence of the BPI3V in pneumonic sheep lungs in Batna region using the direct immunofluorescence antibody technique. The latter may be used for definite diagnosis when histopathological modifications in pneumonic sheep caused by this virus are difficult to distinguish from those caused by other respiratory viruses.

Respiratory viral infections are known for serious economic losses in ruminants. Bovine parainfluenza 3 virus (bPI-3V) a member of Respirovirus genus in association with other respiratory viruses causes respiratory disease complex in ruminants. The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of bPI-3V in non vaccinated cattle, sheep and goats from Grenada. Sera were collected randomly from 60 sheep, 60 goats and 60 cattle from all six parishes of Grenada. Sera were tested for antibodies to bPI-3V using an indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay (ELISA) kit. Antibodies to bPI-3V were detected in 13.4% (Confidence Level (CL): 95%; Confidence Interval (CI): 4.76% to 22.02%) in cattle; 16.7% (CL: 95%; CI: 7.26% to 26.14%) in sheep and 11.7% (CL: 95%; CI: 3.57% to 19.83%) in goats. There was statistically no significant difference in prevalence (p > 0.05) of antibodies to bPI-3V in cattle, sheep and goats in Grenada. This is the first report on seroprevalence of bPI-3V in ruminants in Grenada, West Indies.

Evidence of respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza-3 virus in Mexican sheep

This is a first report in Mexico of the presence of antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza-3 virus in Mexican sheep in different productive stages. We determine the association of serological positivity with age and production system, and obtain molecular evidence of infection by both virus. RSV prevalence in adult sheep was 47% (49/105) at the tropic and 64% (63/99) at the uplands. A significant difference in RSV seropositivity between animals from the tropic and the uplands was observed (P \ 0.05). Seropositivity correlated with production system (P = 0.003, OR = 2.042), with a risk of showing antibodies was 2.042 times higher in sheep under an extensive production system. A significant difference in PI3V seropositivity between animals from either provenance (P = 0.017, OR = 0.475) were also found, with a risk of showing antibodies 0.475 times higher in sheep under an extensive production system. Genetic material from RSV and PI3V was identified by RT-PCR in nasal swab samples from clinically healthy lambs and confirmed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Serological results show that sheep are susceptible to infection by both viruses, and molecular results suggest that the identified antibodies are result of natural infections and reinfections.
