“…Under intensive culture conditions, enteritis (or intestinal inflammation) is emerging as a major cause of high mortality in farmed fish, causing huge annual economic losses (Lee et al, 2002;Soffientino et al, 1999). Bacterial enteritis is probably the most common intestinal disease suffered by freshwater fish (Lü et al, 2011;Macpherson et al, 2012;Muroga et al, 1990;Xu et al, 1987Xu et al, , 1988. Among the bacterial pathogens identified thus far, Aeromonas hydrophila is generally considered a major pathogen in almost all animal taxa, and causes intestinal inflammation in fish (Cascón et al, 2000;Xu et al, 1988).…”

“…In fact, inflammation is a normal biological response of the host immune system to noxious stimuli and conditions, such as bacterial infection and tissue injury, which allows for the repair of damaged or infected tissue. In intensive aquaculture, severe and widespread inflammation can develop more readily in the intestines than in other tissues, largely due to a heavier pathogenic bacteria load in the intestinal lumen or a more effective colonization of the intestinal mucosa282930.…”

“…Although the skin is believed to play a pivotal role in fish immune responses, a few studies have paid attention to it [8e13]. We report here that adult zebrafish were infected by immersion exposure with bacterium C. freundii as previously described [18]. More important, the transcription profile of the skin of infected zebrafish was successfully detected by microarray analysis, which shows the evidence that the use of zebrafish as an immunological model is a valuable platform to explore the interactions between the skin and bacteria, and will also be used to further study the prevention and cure of C. freundii infection.…”

“…Adult zebrafish were infected by immersion with C. freundii as previously described [18]. Zebrafish were acclimatized in aerated fresh water tanks for 15 d prior to the experiment at a water temperature of 25 C, and were fed with commercial dry feed distributed manually twice a day.…”
