Isolation and characterization of a novel strain of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia possessing various dioxygenases for monocyclic hydrocarbon degradation

Abstract: A Gram-negative bacterium, designated as strain KB2, was isolated from activated sludge and was found to utilize different aromatic substrates as sole carbon and energy source. On the basis of morphological and physiochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the isolated strain KB2 was identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Strain KB2 is from among different Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strains the first one described as exhibiting the activities of three types of dioxygenases dependin… Show more

“…Estrone was proposed to undergo ring-cleavage and form 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxyprop-2-enoic acid, which was further biotransformed to 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, and eventually converted to tyrosine. The ring-cleavage characteristic of S. maltophilia has been well-documented (Boonchan et al, 2000;Juhasz et al, 2000;Urszula et al, 2009). S. maltophilia isolated from activated sludge could biodegrade several aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzoate, catechol, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and vanillic acid, by various inducible dioxygenases (Urszula et al, 2009).…”

The occurrence of S. maltophilia in both biological water and wastewater treatment processes and its ring-cleavage capacity suggested its importance in estrogen biodegradation in aquatic environment.…”

“…Acetanilide hydroxylase was analyzed by Shenkman [40] Wiserberg and Goodal [41]. The cat 1, 2 O was determined by Urszula Guzik [42]; while the cat 2, 3O by Grekova [43,44].…”

“…and Paenibacillus agaridevorans. Except for Delftia tsuruhatensis, the rest of these strains have commonly been isolated and reported as oil degrading species (Laurie and Lloyd-Jones, 1999;Rajaei et al, 2013;Urszula et al, 2009). Delftia tsuruhatensis first described in 2003, was isolated from activated sludge collected from a domestic wastewater treatment plant in Japan, and it was able to degrade various (hazardous) aromatic hydrogen carbon compounds (Preiswerk et al, 2011).…”
