“…A 'guineapigs herpes-like virus' (GPHLV) has been repeatedly isolated from kidney cells and other organ cultures derived from leukaemic and non-leukaemic animals (Hsiung & Kaplow, 1969;Booss & Hsiung, 1971;Bhatt, Percy, Craft & Jonas, 1971), and has been shown to be a DNA virus. However, no experimental infection could be produced with this virus: the intranuclear inclusion bodies were found only in degenerated tissue culture cells.…”

“…Originally, we were the first to report the isolation of a guinea pig herpes-like virus (GPHLV) from inbred strain 2 guinea pigs, although randomly bred Hartley guinea pigs occasionally harbor the virus . Subsequently, several other laboratories also isolated GPHLV; the virus was then named Hsiung-Kaplow herpesvirus (Bhatt et al, 1971). We surmised that since the virus was also commonly isolated from inbred guinea pigs, it must be transmitted transplacentally from mother to fetus from generation to generation.…”

“…Guinea pig herpes-like virus (GPHLV) was first isolated from spontaneously degen erating kidney cell cultures from leukemic strain-2 guinea pigs [1], Subsequently, it was isolated from nonleukemic strain-2 animals, Hartley, muta and other guinea pigs [2,3], Although GPHLV infection is clinically inapparent [2], GPHLV has been recovered from a variety of tissues obtained from both naturally and experimentally infected ani mals [4] and vertical transmission of the virus occurs commonly [5],…”
