Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Hydrophobin, Sa-HFB1, with Antifungal Activity from an Alkaliphilic Fungus, Sodiomyces alkalinus

Abstract: The adaptations that alkaliphilic microorganisms have developed due to their extreme habitats promote the production of active natural compounds with the potential to control microorganisms, causing infections associated with healthcare. The primary purpose of this study was to isolate and identify a hydrophobin, Sa-HFB1, from an alkaliphilic fungus, Sodiomyces alkalinus. A potential antifungal effect against pathogenic and opportunistic fungi strains was determined. The MICs of Sa-HFB1 against opportunistic a… Show more

“…Penicillium species of the surface waters of an acid mine produce two activators of signal transduction enzyme inhibition, including caspase-1 (Casp-1) and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) inhibitors [ 126 ]. Specific Casp-1 inhibitors may serve as new drug with highly potent cytotoxic activities [ 127 , 128 , 129 , 130 ]. The specific MMP inhibitors represented a novel therapeutic path to treat cancers by obstructing the activity of MMPs abused by tumour cells.…”

“…Some of these strains showed antimicrobial activity against the opportunistic pathogens Aspergillus niger INA 00760, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, and Candida albicans ATCC 2091. In one of these strains, S. alkalinus 8KS17-10, a class II hydrophobin with antifungal activity against non- and clinical pathogenic isolates was purified and characterized [ 156 ]. We submitted the S. alkalinus genome (BioSample: SAMN02745840) to Antismash [ 157 ] to predict biosynthetic gene clusters and assess their potential as a producer of bioactives.…”

“…with great biotechnological potential. New antimicrobial peptides named emericellipsins A-E and hydrophobins with antibacterial and antifungal activities were recently discovered to be produced by the alkaliphilic fungi Emericellopsis alkalina and Sodiomyces alkalinus [24,25]. These findings demonstrate the significance of conducting antimicrobial activity studies on the fungi present in these extreme environments.…”
