Isolated rupture of the superficial vein of the penis

Abstract: Penile emergencies are rare but when they do occur, prompt diagnosis and treatment are warranted. Emergent conditions of the male genitalia are mainly traumatic, vascular or infectious. Penile emergencies are usually caused by trauma to the penis, during sexual intercourse or manipulation of an erect penis during masturbation. “…Rupture of the dorsal vein of the penis is a rare condition (5) that can occur during sexual intercourse due to stretching of the skin of the penis or blunt trauma to an erect penis. Vascular lesions of the penis can be superficial or deep, depending on the location of the hematoma under or on Buck's fascia (3,4). Superficial rupture of the dorsal vein of the penis (Fig.…”

“…The diagnosis is clinical, although in some cases it can be confused with rupture of the dorsal vein of the penis (2). Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred diagnostic test, but its high cost and limited availability in hospitals can be a challenge (3,4). Surgical exploration can lead to a definitive diagnosis.…”

“…"False penile fracture" is another urological emergency that is difficult to distinguish from penile fracture. Mostly surgical exploration applies also to "false penile fracture" [1][2][3][4][5][6]. We believe it is possible to distinguish between these two different penile emergencies without the need for surgical exploration of "false penile fracture".…”

“…The rupture of penile vessels i.e. superficial dorsal vein, deep dorsal vein and dorsal artery may resemble a penile fracture without the tunical tear [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Those vascular injuries can be called "false penile fracture" which should be treated a different way.…”
