Isolated Renal Metastasis from Primary Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Synchronous Small Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract: Synchronous multiple primary lung cancer is a unique type of lung carcinomas that are diagnosed with more than two different pathological types in the same or different lung lobes. Isolated metastasis to the kidney is considered rare. Herein, we present a case of a 58-year-old male with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 40 pack-year of cigarette smoking, who was diagnosed with synchronous small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with isolated metastasis to the… Show more

“…The lung represents the main primary site for renal metastasis in the majority of studies; the incidence of renal metastases from a lung primary in clinical series is estimated between 26% and 46.5% 4–6,27,28. All different histologic types of lung carcinoma can metastasize to the kidney 22,29–48. In a Japanese series, Ichimatsu et al49 reviewed 64 cases of metastatic renal tumors originating from a lung primary and documented that the histologic subtypes were 57.6% squamous cell carcinoma, 28.8% adenocarcinoma, and 5.1% small cell carcinoma.…”

“…In cases associated with solitary lesions, the distinction from a renal cell carcinoma is critical 151. Renal metastases can be diagnosed by renal ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI 6,42. Features supporting a diagnosis of metastasis include the presence of multifocal, endophytic lesions that are isodense or of lower attenuation compared with renal parenchyma and enhance only slightly with intravenous contrast 42…”
