Isolated Laryngeal Lymphangioma: A Rarity

Abstract: Lymphangiomas are uncommon congenital lesions of the lymphatic system, most often located in the head and neck. Most of these lesions manifest in children less than 2 years of age. Involvement of the larynx in isolation is rare and only a few cases have been reported so far. We report the case of a thirteen-year-old girl who presented with a swelling in the supraglottis. Excision of the mass was done after tracheotomy. Histopathological diagnosis was lymphangioma of the larynx. After a follow up of 15 months t… Show more

“…Radiological imaging is helpful in the diagnosis of lymphangioma. MR can differentiate the mass from surrounding tissue and can provide information about the size of the mass [5]. The size of the mass in this case was similar to those in previously-reported cases.…”

“…Various methods are used in the treatment of lymphangioma such as surgical excision, reducing the mass with lasers, sclerotherapy, and corticosteroids [5]. As bleeding and edema are less in the laser method, it has recently become a preferred method.…”

“…The vascular ectasia in this patient had extended from the proximal of esophagus to the larynx with the finding of upper airway obstruction, which could be caused by infections, structural anomalies such as laryngomalacia, congenital vocal cord paralysis, subglottic stenosis, hemangioma, or cystic hygroma. 11,12 There have been four adult cases of vascular ectasia in esophagus reported in the literature. The case presented here is the first pediatric case of vascular ectasia accompanied with submicroscopic chromosomal anomalies.…”

“…A MRI can demarcate the mass from the surrounding tissues and give the extent of the lesion (Fig. ) . The differential diagnosis includes antrochoanal polyps, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, angiofibroma, cystic lesions, and benign other masses.…”

“…Unlike hemangioma, lymphangioma rarely regress spontaneously . Various treatment options, mainly surgical excision, LASER debulking, sclerotherapy, or corticosteroids have been proposed . Neodymium: yttrium‐aluminum‐garnet (Nd‐YAG) LASER surgery has become a widely preferred method because of its advantages, less bleeding and edema versus conventional surgical resection .…”
