Isokinetic torque imbalances of shoulder of the french women's national water polo team

Abstract: Objective : Evaluate the shoulder isokinetic strength of high-level female water polo players. Methods : Two groups were compared: a control group of noncompetitive females (n=10), and members of the the french women's national water polo (n=18). Isokinetic measurements focused on the shoulder internal rotators (IR) and external rotators (ER), the evaluations were realized at 60°•s-1 and 240°•s-1 in the concentric mode and at 60°•s-1 in the eccentric mode. Agonist-antagonist ratios (ER/IR) were calculated usin… Show more

“…Considering that there is a sudden change of moment in the start-stop phase of motion, and for a specific subject, the lifting trajectory that the manipulator can complete when lifting at each joint plane is related to its workspace, the range of lifting angle in different lifting planes is different [ 21 ].…”

“…Imbalance commonly refers to a modi cation of the strength balance between agonist and antagonist muscles that could accompany a proven pathology, articular con ict or functional impairment. Although no prospective study has been conducted to determine what proportion of a muscle imbalance can cause an injury in an athlete, these ratios are also used in injury prevention in sport because for many authors they constitute an element of functional speci city of joints [29]. However, the primary means to determine the ratios between agonist and antagonist muscles is the use of isokinetic dynamometers, which are very expensive and associated with di cult manipulation.…”

“…Although other authors have published normative values on shoulder strength in water polo players, [60][61][62][63] only one group has included an injured sample in their studies. 46 47 Hams et al assessed shoulder strength in 15 national-level water polo athletes using a hand-held dynamometer and standardised measurement protocol.…”
