ISMS: Computer-Aided Analysis for Design of Decision-Support Systems

Abstract: This paper demonstrates concepts, collectively termed interpretive structural modeling, which can aid in the development of decision-support systems through: (1) creating a structure which helps identify the presence or absence of information necessary for decision-making; (2) providing a convenient framework for evaluating control subsystems; (3) defining levels in the system hierarchy; (4) specifying subsystems at each level, and (5) facilitating user participation in the design process. The procedures descr… Show more

“…These are step 1: ISM begins with an issue or problem, step 2: the next step is to identify the elements that comprise the issue context which are listed, and step 3: in the third step, pairs of elements are compared graphically or in a relation matrix, using a contextual relationship, which is mostly a verb or a verb phrase. Hansen et al (1979) have elaborated ISM as the representation of a problematique because it captures the richness and the variety of complex phenomena. Anderson et al (1994) have discussed a framework for business performance improvement and leadership to test its 'fitness' through interpretive structural equation modeling to be used for understanding the predictive behavior of the acquisition success.…”

“…There are three broad steps to developing an interpretive structural model. ISM begins with an issue or problem (Hansen et al, 1979). In an academic research setting, researchers in collaboration with respondents typically identify this problem.…”

“…Warfield (1982) discusses the relevant ISM applications in various fields, including education, administration, sociology, and psychology. Scholars continue to consider the supply chain, reverse logistics, performance measurement systems, partner selection, and key success factors among the variety of decision-making issues, as criteria susceptible to this analysis of their effects in decision-making relationships (Anantatmula, 2008;Bhattacharya and Momaya, 2009;Hansen et al, 1979;Thakkar et al, 2005;Thakkar et al, 2007).…”
