Islanding phenomenon elimination study at Rokko test center

Abstract: When a certain part of the utility grid, with substantial number of interconnected PVs, gets cut off from the grid islanding phenomenon may occur. There are two ways to suppress the islanding phenomenon, one of them is performed on the utility side, the other one on the PV side. On the utility side the reactor insertion method and the capacitor insertion method are advocated. The islanding phenomenon suppression characteristics of these two methods are compared in tests. Further, it is proved that the process,… Show more

“…The topic of whether multiple-inverter testing for certification and listing purposes (if so, how many) also must be addressed soon. In the impedance insertion method, a low-value-impedance, usually a capacitor bank [21,22,23] is installed on the utility system inside the potential island at point "b" as shown in Figure 9. The switch is normally open.…”

“…This method offers several advantages. It is highly effective in preventing islanding [21,22] as long as the small delay is allowed between the time of switch opening and the time of capacitor insertion to ensure that insertion of the capacitor will not actually create a balanced situation between the PV inverter and a lagging load. Capacitors of this type are readily available, and utilities have a great deal of experience with them.…”

“…Detection times can be above certain standards, such as [12]. Though, the islanding detection time decreases as the capacitance increases [11], obtaining standard complying delays with relatively small capacities, about 20% of the generation capacity [13]. Therefore, the impedance value should be sized according to the minimum variation of frequency that can be detected.…”

“…However, setting an appropriate harmonic threshold to disconnect the inverter is nearly impossible due to presence of nonlinear loads. This renders the harmonic monitoring method as impractical [6].…”
