Island of opportunity: can New Guinea protect amphibians from a globally emerging pathogen?

Abstract: The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (chytrid) has caused the most widespread, disease‐induced declines and extinctions in vertebrates recorded to date. The largest climatically suitable landmass that may still be free of this fungus is New Guinea. “…Further surveys for the pathogen are necessary across the Solomon Islands archipelago, but a precautionary approach should be taken -management strategies and disease surveillance protocols that assume B. dendrobatidis has not yet been introduced to the Solomon Islands archipelago and that native amphibians may be at risk of impact if the fungus is introduced, should be implemented.
