Ischemic post-conditioning attenuates the intestinal injury induced by limb ischemia/reperfusion in rats

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of ischemic post-conditioning on damage to the barrier function of the small intestine caused by limb ischemia-reperfusion injury. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (N = 36 each): sham operated (group S), lower limb ischemia-reperfusion (group LIR), and post-conditioning (group PC). Each group was divided into subgroups (N = 6) according to reperfusion time: immediate (0 h; T1), 1 h (T2), 3 h (T3), 6 h (T4), 12 h (T5), and 2… Show more

“…After histological analysis according Chiu et al 20 it was demonstrated that without PTX 1,13,14,16 and PGE1 [17][18][19][20] The PGE1 [17][18][19], is known by its intense vasodilator effect, for being a substance with intense biological activity that has been used for such a longtime to treat. the chronic arterial occlusive disease, since beside to vasodilation capacity it also inhibit platelets aggregation.…”

“…A PTX 1,13,14,16 has an antioxidant action directly inhibiting the anion superoxide that also indirectly block xanthine-oxidase enzyme activity. Therefore, it seems to decrease intensity of inflammatory response reducing neutrophils migration to the local area, decreasing liberation of cytokines, of tumoral necrosis factor, platelet activator factor and endothelin among other factors.…”

“…It is important to point out the cyclic character of this process, since the initial damage to the intestinal barrier is probably caused by the excessive production of free radicals, primarily and inflammatory cytokines, complementary. This occurs because the free radicals produced during the reperfusion period are the main agents responsible for the injuries in organs which are distant from those that suffered ischemia 5,15,16 . Considering that the ORS take part in the induction mechanism and the inflammation action, it is postulated that by reducing their formation, there will be reduction in the inflammation, minimizing the reperfusion injury.…”
