ISA model: A constitutive model for soils with yield surface in the intergranular strain space

Abstract: Summary In this article, a new constitutive model for soils is proposed. It is formulated by means of plasticity, but in contrast to the precedent works, it presents a yield function describing a surface within the intergranular strain space. This latter is a state variable providing information of the recent strain history. An expression for the plastic strain rate has been proposed to guarantee the stress rate continuity. Under the application of medium or large strain amplitudes, the constitutive equation b… Show more

“…For an application of the approach of Wegener and Herle, to reduce the strain accumulation by changing the fade‐in of the nonlinear model, only the exponent χ in the third term of Equations and has to be changed. As the ISA model is also applicable to hypoplastic models using the bold-scriptLboldN formulation, the possibility of applying the ISA model to other material models is provided by the approaches presented here. However, it has to be mentioned that the shortcomings of the original intergranular strain concept are also reproduced by the here presented approaches; see Figure .…”

“…This concept was extended by several authors, eg, Wegener and Herle, Mašín or Fuentes and Triantafyllidis, to improve its performance and to capture more soil features. Wegener and Herle added an additional material parameter to control the transition between the small strain and the large strain model.…”

“…To improve simulations of the nonlinear response in the small‐strain range and accumulative strains under cycling with small strain amplitude, hypoplastic constitutive models with intergranular strain (IS) have been proposed by Niemunisand and Herle . Recently, the framework of intergranular strain anisotropy (ISA) has been proposed by Fuentes and Triantafyllidis and Poblete et al, in which the existence of an elastic region allows improvement of model performance under cyclic loading conditions, such as memory effects and elevated stiffness upon stress reversal. Other recent development of hypoplastic models can be found for simulating frozen soils and rate‐dependency of granular soils .…”
