ISA accelerometer onboard the Mercury Planetary Orbiter: error budget

Abstract: We have estimated a preliminary error budget for the Italian Spring Accelerometer (ISA) that will be allocated onboard the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) of the European Space Agency (ESA) space mission to Mercury named BepiColombo. The role of the accelerometer is to remove from the list of unknowns the non-gravitational accelerations that perturb the gravitational trajectory followed by the MPO in the strong radiation environment that characterises the orbit of Mercury around the Sun. Such a role is of fund… Show more

“…In particular, they could be attainable with an adaptation of the ISA BepiColombo accelerometer to the proposed mission. Very important in this respect is the fact that METRIC would offer a stable environment for the instruments it will host; indeed, a relevant part of the accelerometer error budget in that case is given by spurious signals coming from the on-board environment itself (see, e.g., [26,51]). …”

“…ISA is a three-axes accelerometer realised by assembling three single accelerometers, arranged to form an orthogonal reference frame inside the MPO [2,3,6,14]. The core of each sensor is manufactured from a single piece of aluminium A17075, carved through milling machine, to obtain a proof mass (sensing element) hanged on an external frame through a tiny foil-shaped spring (∼140 m in width), having elastic constant k t (Fig.…”
