Is Transradial Cerebral Angiography Feasible and Safe? A Single Center's Experience

Abstract: Objective : Although a transradial angiography is accepted as the gold standard for cardiovascular procedures, cerebral angiography has been performed via transfemoral approach in most institutions. The purpose of this study is to present our experience concerning the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of a transradial approach to cerebral angiography as an alternative to a transfemoral approach. Methods : Between February 2007 and October 2009, a total of 1,240 cerebral angiographies were performed via a trans… Show more

“…A percutaneous lateral atlanto-occipital approach was refined by Maslowski in 1950 2. Currently, if femoral access is difficult, the transradial approach can be done with high rates of success and safety 3 4. In small series of patients where transfemoral or radial approaches were difficult, direct percutaneous puncture and surgical cutdown techniques appeared effective and safe, with >90% success rate of canulating the target vessel 5 6.…”

“…[30][31][32] Cerebral angiography from the radial artery has been performed and described for more than a decade, 33,34 including a large series of more than 1000 patients in Korea in 2010. 35 More recently, complex cerebral interventions, including aneurysm coiling, have been performed using TRA. 36 Widespread adoption in the United States is currently limited by availability of equipment required to successfully perform these cases.…”

“…Despite extensive cardiology [11] and peripheral catheterization experience, neurodiagnostic and neurointerventional radial access continues to be underutilized [12,13]. Though in our opinion it offers distinct advantages in many settings, most aortic arch variants, with the exception of the bovine arch, are unforgiving to the radial access aficionado, at least from the usual right radial approach.…”
