“…A recent review of online game addiction surveys concluded that tolerance (when operationalized as spending more time gaming to affect one's feelings (as does the AICA-S) in contrast to spending more time without a reason), seemed indeed to be a component of online gaming addiction (Hellman, Schoenmakers, Nordstrom, & Van Holst, 2012). On the other hand, spending more time online might be something different than physiological habituation reactions, which could be indicators of loss of control.…”

“…There is growing proof of individuals finding it so hard to not use online game even though they would like to, frequently disregarding their psychological and physical health. (Charlton, 2002;Kim, Namkoong, Ku, & Kim, 2008;Ng & Wiemer-Hastings, 2005;Hellman, Schoenmakers, Nordstrom & van Holst, 2013).

“…Vaughan Bell and others have argued that the very notion of ''Internet addiction'' represents a category error, in that ''the Internet'' is a medium of communication or a particular kind of environment, rather than a behavior (Bell, 2007). While one means of addressing this concern would be to create even more specific categories (such as ''online video game addiction,'' [Hellman, Schoenmakers, Nordstrom, & van Holst, 2013]) which would address particular computer-related activities, the broader point Bell and others make is that distressful patterns involving communications and information technologies may be adequately described using existing diagnostic categories (Bell, 2007;Pies, 2009). In other words, a question which remains deeply contested in the literature on harmful Internet use is whether activities such as video gaming create the conditions for distinct kinds of disorder or whether they simply furnish a context for the enactment, precipitation, or amplification of behaviors associated with preexisting conditions such as OCD or depression.…”
