Is there any relationship between adc values of diffusion-weighted imaging and the histopathological prognostic factors of invasive ductal carcinoma?

Abstract: The literature contains studies that report conflicting results which may be caused by differences in B values, ROI area and magnetic field strength. Multicentre studies and systematic reviews of these findings may produce crucial data for the use of DWI in breast cancer. Advances in knowledge: To determine if any significant relationship exists between DWI findings and prognostic factors of breast cancer.

“…Regarding its prognostic role, the ADC of breast cancer has been associated with many biological markers of disease. A low ADC is associated with positive expression of estrogen receptors, increased microvascular density, and increased Ki-67, although the correlation between prognostic parameters and ADC is still discussed [ 29 ]. Further, concerning treatment response, ADC has been reported to increase earlier compared to the occurrence of morphological changes [ 26 ].…”

“…On the contrary, the ADC values measured in either the tumor or the peritumoral area performed poorly. Conflicting results on the prognostic significance of tumor ADC values have previously been attributed to differences in breast anatomy, the locations of the ADC measurements, the devices or protocols used, or mechanical artefacts [42]. However, the better performance of the peritumor/tumor ADC ratio may prove useful in the prognostication of breast cancer or as an additional tool for clinical decisionmaking.…”

“…Several studies have investigated the use of texture parameters from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) images in breast cancer [1113]. In addition, the standard ADC histogram analysis for the identification of malignant lesions and its relationship to molecular prognostic factors were evaluated in recent studies [1416]. However, to our knowledge, investigators have not determined whether histogram analysis of both IVIM and non-Gaussian diffusion could identify HER2-positive breast cancer from other subtypes.…”
