Limited agricultural land areas combined with increasing demands for food require breakthroughs in land use development using agroforestry systems. Intercropping root crops with trees could be an alternative for food production in forest areas. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott) farming on dry land within 12- and 42-year-old teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) forests to support local food security. The feasibility assessment took into account both productivity and socio-economic aspects. The agroforestry land productivity was measured using the land equivalent ratio (LER), and our analysis of the cocoyam farming within the teak stands was carried out using the revenue/cost ratio (R/C) at the demonstration plot scale. Furthermore, we also surveyed farmers’ perceptions of the production of cocoyam for food security. The results showed that the R/C values of cocoyam tuber production in agroforestry systems were lower than 1. However, the production rates of cocoyam tubers in the 12-year-old teak stand (48.3% light intensity) and the 42-year-old teak stand (62.5% light intensity) were 2.64 and 2.76 tons/ha, respectively. The overall yields from the teak and cocoyam agroforestry systems were more profitable than those of the monoculture system, as indicated by the LER values of 1.61 and 1.85. Cocoyam production was socially acceptable (77% of respondents) as a smallholder subsistence agroforestry practice to meet food demand. Increasing cocoyam productivity in teak forests requires the adoption of agroforestry silvicultural technology to achieve food security for rural communities. To increase their farming production and income, farmers could apply intensive silvicultural practices. Governmental support that could be provided includes encouraging product diversification and providing assistance for the processing and marketing of cocoyam products.

Neglected and underutilized crops can play a vital role in achieving food security as humans concentrate on consuming a few food crops which have increased in price over time. Understanding the profitability of these crops can enhance farmers’ decisions to grow them. Therefore, this study investigated cocoyam production profitability, factors responsible for its profitability, and the constraints faced in cocoyam production in Cross River State, Nigeria. Data collected primarily with the use of questionnaires were analysed with descriptive statistics, cost and return analysis, multiple regression and the Likert rating scale. The results revealed that the majority of cocoyam farmers were male, married, in their economically active age and operated on a small scale. Cocoyam production was a profitable venture as the farmers had a gross margin of N175, 822.45 (USD 428.04) per hectare of cultivated land with an operating ratio of 0.24 and a return on capital invested of 3.17. The factors that influenced the profitability of cocoyam production were education, household size, farm size, farm output, cooperative membership, access to credit and annual income. The major constraints faced in cocoyam production were inadequate access to credit, poor government support, high cost of inputs and poor storage facilities. To enhance cocoyam profitability, the study recommends the provision of farm inputs and financial support to inform of credit or grants to the farmers. This would not only increase their profit but also enhance the decision to increase production which will increase food availability and, in turn, reduce the problem of food insecurity.

Marketing channel choice makes important contributions to the incomes and other livelihood attributes among smallholder farmers in developing countries. Often considered from a number of perspectives, the dominant view articulated suggests an advantageous integration into formal market channels. This position is questioned as it has implications for smallholder farmers’ food security and rural incomes. Using a mixed methods approach, the study collected primary data from 174 smallholder farmers and applied both a descriptive and multinomial logit regression model to analyze factors contributing to cocoyam production and market channel choices among respondents in the study area. Findings indicate that financial returns and available markets were key factors in cocoyam production, while amount received was a driver of market channel choice among 89% of respondents who sold directly at farm-gate. Farmers’ age (p=0.044), household size (p=0.043), distance to market (p=0.021), additional income (p=0.017) and amount received (p=0.014) were significant variables (p<.05) in the determinants of market channel choice. The study recommended improving market information provision and strengthening farmer associations which will enable smallholder farmers in rural communities to make informed choices with respect to produce price, access other markets and consolidate their collective market bargaining position.
