Objective To study the utilization of dental care in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and compare the incidence of common dental disorders in patients with and without RA. Methods This data used in this study was from the population-based Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified 1337 patients with newly diagnosed RA between January 2000 and December 2012. We also identified 13,370 individual without a diagnosis of RA using frequency matching on 5-year age intervals, sex, and index year. Patients with a diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome were excluded. Dental disorders were identified using respective ICD-9-CM codes confirmed by dentists. The incidence and incidence rate ratio [IRR] of each dental disorders were calculated using Poisson regression. Results Compared with the comparison cohort, the prevalence of dentist visits in the RA cohort were significantly higher (70.3% vs. 66.7%, p = 0.008) and the frequency of dentist visits in the RA cohort were also significantly higher (median 2.67 vs. 1.78 per year, p < 0.001). In addition, the incidence of visits for dental caries (adjusted IRR 1.16, p < 0.001), pulpitis (adjusted IRR 1.12, p = 0.044), gingivitis (adjusted IRR 1.13, p = 0.027), periodontitis (adjusted IRR 1.13, p = 0.004), and oral ulcer (adjusted IRR 1.24, p = 0.003) were higher in patients with RA. Conclusions An elevated prevalence and frequency of dental visits were associated with patients with RA. In addition, elevated incidence of dental disorders, including dental caries, pulpitis, gingivitis, periodontitis, and oral ulceration, were observed. Oral health should be accessed regularly in patients with RA.

Introduction. Evaluation of detailed features of the supporting bone is an important step in diagnosis and treatment planning for teeth with clinical attachment loss. Fractal analysis can be used as a method for evaluating the complexity of trabecular bone structures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trabecular bone changes in periapical radiographs of patients with different stages of periodontitis using fractal analysis. Methods. This comparative cross-sectional study was performed on patients with and without clinical attachment loss in mandibular first molars. Teeth with clinical attachment loss were divided into mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis groups. Digital periapical radiographs were obtained from the mandibular first molars using the same exposure parameters. DICOM file of the radiographs was exported to ImageJ software for fractal analysis. Three regions of interest (ROIs) were considered in each radiograph: two proximal ROIs mesial and distal to the mandibular first molar and one apical ROI. Fractal dimension (FD) values were calculated using the fractal box counting approach. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test, Mann–Whitney test, intraclass correlation coefficient, and ANOVA (α = 0.05). Results. FD values were significantly different between moderate and severe periodontitis and healthy periodontal bone ( P < 0.05 ), except for the distal ROI for moderate periodontitis cases ( P = 0.280 ). However, FD values of the supporting bone in periodontally healthy teeth and teeth with mild periodontitis did not show a statistically significant difference ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion. Fractal analysis is a useful tool for evaluation of bone alterations in moderate and severe periodontitis, but was not able to detect the most initial radiographic bone signs of mild periodontitis.

The emergence of single-cell RNA sequencing enables simultaneous sequencing of thousands of cells, making the analysis of cell population heterogeneity more efficient. In recent years, single-cell RNA sequencing has been used in the investigation of heterogeneous cell populations, cellular developmental trajectories, stochastic gene transcriptional kinetics, and gene regulatory networks, providing strong support in life science research. However, the application of single-cell RNA sequencing in the field of oral science has not been reviewed comprehensively yet. Therefore, this paper reviews the development and application of single-cell RNA sequencing in oral science, including fields of tissue development, teeth and jaws diseases, maxillofacial tumors, infections, etc., providing reference and prospects for using single-cell RNA sequencing in studying the oral diseases, tissue development, and regeneration. | INTRODUCTIONOn the analysis of mixed samples of thousands of cells, bulk RNA sequencing is prone to uncover gene expression by sequencing on average in the absence of the cellular transcriptome heterogeneity of individual cells.
