Is there an association between pelvic organ prolapse and oxidative stress? A systematic review

Abstract: Introduction and hypothesis The pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) has not been fully elucidated, although accumulating evidence suggests that oxidative stress is involved. The present systematic review comprehensively discusses this topic. Methods The PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant studies published up to May 2021. This systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO database (registration number CRD42021242240). Two independent researchers scree… Show more

“…In addition, we found that smooth muscle cells and macrophages in the uterosacral ligament showed strong expression of stress-response genes 45 . SMCs3-speci c marker CFHR1 can bind to necrotic oxidized low-density lipoprotein and strongly induces in ammasome NLRP3 in monocytes and neutrophils by exposure to EMR2 and then secretes pro-in ammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6.IL18, and TNFα 30,31 .…”
