Is there an association between congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction and cesarean delivery?

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to research the relationship between types of birth and congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Method: The study enrolled 665 infantile patients with prediagnosis of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction due to associated ophthalmic symptoms. Age, gender, family history, delivery type, and patient medical records were investigated. Patients were grouped and compared according to their birth type and whether it was the first birth. Results: The number of the infants with… Show more

“…Infants born via primary cesarean section are not exposed to an increased intrauterine pressure and lytic enzymes, which are considered to be effective mechanisms in the development of CNLDO [5][6][7][8]15]. Therefore, if the mode of delivery had been vaginal in some of our cases that underwent primary cesarean section, CNLDO may have not developed.…”

“…The prevalence of CNLDO in Down syndrome has been reported to be 5-30% [6][7][8] and the bilateral obstruction is the most observed disease pattern among above children. Moreover, there are conflicting opinions on whether childbirth through cesarean section increases the chance of the occurrence of the CNLDO [3,[9][10][11][12]. The nasolacrimal duct is formed by canalization of the caudal extremity of an epithelial cord derived from the ectoderm in the naso-optic fissure.…”

“…However, they found a significant relationship between the complex type CNLDO (n = 28) and cesarean delivery (p = 0.016). Alakus et al [17] suggested no relationship between CNLDO and CS delivery. However, in patients born via first delivery, the CS delivery rate in patients with CNLDO (58.7%) was significantly higher than those without CNLDO (20.7%) (p < 0.001) [17].…”

They stated that permanent pelvic floor damage develops in the first vaginal delivery, which causes less labor pressure and fetus compression in the following vaginal deliveries.…”
