Is there a role for leptin in the reduction of depression symptoms during weight loss therapy in obese adolescent girls and boys?

Abstract: Several studies have sought to clarify the association between adolescent obesity and psychological distress. Recently, a biological link between leptin resistance and depression has been proposed. The aim of the present study was to examine changes in leptin concentrations as a potential predictor of reduced depression symptoms in obese adolescents during long-term interdisciplinary weight loss therapy. Seventy-five obese adolescents (age: 16.28±2.37 years; BMI: 35.65±4.64 kg/m2) engaged in a long-term interd… Show more

“…In our study, we observed an attenuation of hyperleptinemia upon training, in keeping with an improvement of leptin regulation induced by a higher energy expenditure [29, 34]. Associated to the better food intake control in trained HF mice, our data are in accordance with other studies suggesting that exercise training reduces leptin resistance [3537]. …”

“…Our findings indicate that female patients with MDD have elevated circulating leptin levels compared with depressed males. Leptin, an adipocyte-derived protein, has emerged as a key player in the pro-inflammatory process in obesity and metabolic syndrome and is, therefore, considered a pivotal link in obesity-related diseases ( 36 , 37 ). Prior literature has also suggested a relationship between leptin and depression ( 19 , 20 , 38 , 39 ).…”

“…Obesity has been characterized as a state of reduced resistance or sensitivity to various hormones, including leptin. Most obese individuals have high serum levels of leptin that are compatible with their adipose mass, suggesting that the mechanism is more a resistance to the action of this hormone than to the lack of it [33][34][35]. This state of hyperleptinemia produces an inadequate response in weight loss therapy and favors the inflammatory process in the constellation of chronic diseases [36].…”

“…According to model cognitive [51,52], the depression and anxiety symptoms are products of cognitive distortions. It is believed that interdisciplinary therapy favored the developmental of more flexible and adaptive cognitive patterns that may have attenuated the psychological suffering and effective behavior changes [35,37].…”
