Is There a Role for Tamsulosin in Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Renal and Ureteral Calculi?

Abstract: The alpha-blocker tamsulosin seemed to facilitate stone clearance, particularly with larger stones during shock wave lithotripsy for renal and ureteral calculus. It also appeared to improve the outcome of steinstrasse. Tamsulosin may have a potential role in routine shock wave lithotripsy.

“…Two of the four studies used tamsulosin, while one used a calcium channel blocker and the other an herbal agent (phyllanthus niruri). [46][47][48][49][50] The use of medical expulsive therapy was associated with a 17% increase in SWL success rates with a number needed to treat of six. A more recent meta-analysis focused solely on the use of alpha blockers post-SWL and had similar findings.…”

“…The authors identified seven trials that met the inclusion criteria and found that the use of alpha-blockers, which was tamsulosin in all seven studies, improved SWL success by 16%. 47,[51][52][53][54][55][56][57] The authors also reported reduced time to fragment passage, reduced pain, and required less analgesia.…”

“…16 In another study results showed excellent success for renal and ureteric stones. 17 Another researcher Gravas showed in study no difference of results patients taking Tamsulosin or not post ESWL. 18 He also studied that tamsulosin is beneficial in terms that it reduces the needs of pain killers in ESWL.…”

“…7 The control group (30) received 0.4 mg tamsulosin and the study group (30) received placebo daily until stone clearance or for a maximum of 30 days. The overall clearance rate was 96.6% (28 of 29) in their study group and 79.3% (23 of 29) in the control group (p = 0.04).…”
