Is there a correlation between OSAS duration/severity and carotid intima-media thickness?

Abstract: Our study shows that the duration of OSAS and its severity are important factor related with higher values of IMT and hence with a higher risk of atherosclerosis.

“…An important tool for evaluating early impairment of the vascular structures leading toward a systemic atherosclerotic process is the IMT evaluation. 29 In our study, C-IMT values are increased in the IH and the emphysema group, whereas those in the overlap group are the highest, which suggests clinically that patients with the combination of COPD and OSA may have a worse vascular prognosis than patients who have only one of these diseases. Within the vasculature, the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors by inflammatory cells causes proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells from the media to the intima, as well as recruitment of new immunoinflammatory cells from circulation.…”

“…PWV has been shown to be faster among SAS patients than among control subjects [3]. In addition, AHI is known to be related to calcification of the coronary artery [4], the duration of SAS is related to IMT [5], and the severity of SAS is associated with IMT [6]. In the present study, our findings did not show a relationship between PWV, IMT or ABI and the severity of SAS.…”

“…Some researchers have also suggested that SAS is related to atherosclerosis [3,4,5,6], which is a risk factor for CVD and death [7]. However, few papers describe such associations in human subjects, and which of the parameters of atherosclerosis are most strongly associated with the severity of SAS remains unknown; thus, it is clinically important to clarify how SAS induces atherosclerosis of the carotid artery.…”

“…Increased CIMT is not synonymous with atherosclerosis, but the primary pathophysiological mechanisms are similar between the two conditions 13. Ciccone et al 17 reported a positive relationship between CIMT and the duration of OSA. Increased CIMT is related with high risk CVDs,18 cardiovascular incidents19 and more serious coronary atherosclerosis 20.…”
