Is the single self-rated health item reliable in India? A construct validity study

Abstract: IntroductionIn high-income countries, the self-rated health (SRH) item is used in health surveys to capture the population’s general health because of its simplicity and satisfactory validity and reliability. Despite scepticism about its use in low-income and middle-income countries, India implemented the SRH item in many of its demographic and population health surveys, but evidence of its validity is lacking. The objective was to assess the construct validity of the SRH item in India.MethodsData for 4492 men… Show more

“…Waste pickers who were at risk of mental ill health were more likely to report poor personal health status. This is in agreement with a previous study from India which found a relationship between mental health and SRH [40]. Waste pickers in Guatemala reported fewer visits to clinics due to perceived discrimination by clinic staff which could cause stress and depression [19].…”

“…Machado et al [39] reported an association between chronic diseases and poor SRH. A study from India also reported an association between SRH and chronic disease [40]. Chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension were significantly associated with reporting poor health and were the most prevalent among waste pickers [12,41].…”

“…Studies investigating the association of SRH and physical function at any age in lowand middle-income settings, such as Brazil, are also rare (Pérez-Zepeda et al, 2016;Cullati et al, 2018) and conclusions from studies with high-income populations may not be applicable to lower-income settings. Some authors have noted that individuals from high-income locations, where there are more educational opportunities and health facilities, are in a better position to evaluate their own health status than individuals from low-income settings, where they may be less aware of adverse health conditions affecting them (Sen, 2002;Huisman, Van Lenthe & Mackenbach, 2007).…”

“…Second, the study has been conducted in one single country, Switzerland, thus its generalisability is subject to caution. However, studies have suggested construct validity of SRH was similar across very different countries [2]. Third, almost all SRH's covariates, be they health factors, health behaviours, health problems, demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, etc., were significantly different across waves.…”
