Is the Internet Really Ruining Your Memory? Keep Reading as Modifiable Protective Factor Against Cognitive Impairment

Abstract: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) would correspond to a preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease. The aim of this study was to find associations between lifestyle individual factors compatible scores with cognitive impairment (CI) in SCD people. Methods: This is a case-control study to detect SCD, CI and potential associated factors in 497 patients over 50 years in Community Pharmacies. Three screening tests detected possible CI and patients with at least one test compatible with CI were referred to Primary C… Show more

“…As observed in our study, cognitive stimulation variables such as internet use, reading, quizzes, and mind games are statistically significantly associated with reduced CI. These data are consistent with previous studies, suggesting that modifiable lifestyle factors, like reading and daily Internet use, can slow cognitive decline in patients aged 50 and above with SMC (Ramos et al, 2021a).…”

“…Moreover, a study in Brazil also showed a significant association between continued internet use and higher cognitive performance [47]. In this sense, other studies found that internet use was associated with less CI in neuropsychological test [48]. However, the use of digital technologies may provide less benefit to people with dementia than people with MCI, which could reinforce the importance of this factor in the early stages of dementia [49].…”
